Jan Murphy Gallery is excited to present, Alchemy, the new online exhibition by Jason Fitzgerald. Experimentation with robust shapes and glazes is evident in this new series of sculptural works by Fitzgerald. Through the process the artist has embraced the ‘trials and errors’ inherent in the production of stoneware. Borrowing from a modernist aesthetic, his ceramic sculptures and faceted vessels offer him the freedom to explore material possibilities and expose surface imperfections.
As described by the artist,”…these handmade stoneware vessels were created purely as a canvas for my glazes, experimental vehicles that allow me to play with colour combinations and the different effects achieved by layering. The glaze responds directly to the iron contained in the clay, creating a worn, weathered surface full of imperfections. It’s this flawed surface that I love so much and believe holds the true beauty of the work.” (Jason Fitzgerald)
